On May 24-27, 1978, exactly 40 years ago in this city of Cagayan de Oro during the 1st General General Assembly, mindful of the pastoral and prophetic task, the UCCP courageously declared its strong condemnation and oppostion to the Martial Law of President Ferdinand Marcos as it killed democracy, robbed the people of their rights and freedom and caused them intolerable suffering. The church, sustained by the Spirit of Jesus Christ and always guided by the Holy Scriptures, remained steadfast and never waned in its fight for justice, freedom and democracy during those dark years of Marcosian Martial rule.

LET MARY JANE VELOSO SPEAK
If the prophets were speaking today, they would criticize the yawning gap between the testimony of Mary Jane’s recruiters and her testimony. God’s call for justice and righteousness is lived out in how we maintain our economic systems and in our personal character – especially in how we treat the poor. According to the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers, Mary Jane’s traffickers have an extensive list of witnesses to testify to their character. A list of character witnesses for Mary Jane’s traffickers, is no substitute for Mary Jane’s testimony of events that transpired and led to her arrest and imprisonment.
JUSTICE FOR KIAN AND ALL VICTIMS OF THE ILLEGAL DRUG INDUSTRY
We call on the CYF to build awareness on this issue. We must look into credible sources of information as we study this problem and conduct discussions in all platforms available, in the social media, our Bible Studies and Sunday Schools. Let us open our churches and lead people to the redeeming love of Christ. Let us coordinate with our local governments, ecumenical and interfaith partners on how we could further increase awareness on the ill effects of this Illegal Drug Industry and how we may rehabilitate those who have experienced drug abuse and addiction and who have been involved in drugs. Let us help them in renewing their lives— to lives lived to the full in the service of God and the community .
