The United Church of Christ in the Philippines deplores in the strongest terms the recent order issued by the Anti- Money Laundering Council (AMLAC) “freezing the bank deposits and assets of a religious group’s center allegedly used to finance or support terrorism. The order covers the three bank accounts of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines’ (UCCP) Haran Center with the Philippine National Bank amounting to more or less PHP600,000” (referring to UCCP-Haran in Davao City) as quoted from the report released by the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on March 28, 2021.

STOP THE ATTACKS, STOP THE KILLINGS END IMPUNITY!

STOP THE ATTACKS, STOP THE KILLINGS END IMPUNITY!

The Council of Bishops of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines abhors in the strongest terms all such acts of terror and violence against legitimate dissenters even as we also lament with the families of victims. That Sunday of March 7, 2021 was marred by blood of people who did nothing wrong but bravely stood for truth and justice. To say that the victims resisted arrest or “nanlaban” is absolutely ridiculous and absurd, much less irrational and barbaric. We condemn the killings of at least nine (9) persons and the illegal arrests of six others in corresponding raids in offices and houses of progressive groups on Sunday, March 7, 2021.

The February 15, 2021 police raid of the Lumad Bakwit School in the SVD University of San Carlos Talamban Campus-Cebu in the guise of rescue operation is a blatant violation of the right to education and the right to self-determination of indigenous children and youth. The Council of Bishops condemns this atrocious act by the Police Regional Office -7 and the involved state security forces. The allegations that the Lumad Bakwit Schools or the Indigenous Evacuee School is a training ground of the guerilla New People’s Army are untenable.
